The Faces of San Leandro

The San Leandro Sports Foundation invites the community to celebrate the “iconic” sports field’s transformation at special event in March.
The celebration will be held at Burrell Field and the Pacific Sports Complex. In addition to celebrating the “iconic” sports field’s first 60 years, proceeds from the SLSF will go to supporting sports, health and fitness programs in San Leandro schools.
The community’s successful passage of Measure M, the $50.1 million school facilities bond passed by San Leandro voters in November 2010, set in motion the renovation of Burrell Field and the Pacific Sports Complex. Memories run deep at the old ball field. Built in 1963 as part of Pacific High School, Burrell Field served as the Vikings home field for 20 years. For two decades, it has been the home field of the San Leandro High School Pirates. This April, the beloved but worn out old sports complex will be torn down and a new facility will be built to serve the needs of future San Leandrans.
Yes, it’s a blast from the past, as Pacific High School Alumni and their families will enjoy a walk down “memory lane” featuring pictures and articles of life at Pacific High in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s—and a last chance to enjoy the old Burrell Field while enjoying the camaraderie of the people, places and events that shaped so many lives.
Traditional game day events will include cheerleading, festive bands, delicious food concessions, and a special “feature event of the day”— a friendly flag football game between former Vikings and Pirates students.
Please join the San Leandro Sports Foundation in celebrating the next chapter in the life of Burrell Field and the Pacific Sports Complex.
